Miller Appoints Howden’s Cumberland to New Role of Chief Broking Officer

Miller, the London-based independent specialist re/insurance broker, announced the appointment of Paul Cumberland as chief broking officer, a newly created global role reporting directly to James Hands, group CEO.

With more than 25 years of industry experience, Cumberland brings deep expertise in broking, underwriting, and portfolio management across a wide range of business lines and market segments. He has held senior roles at Aon, Markel, and Marsh, with a strong track record in both client and insurer-facing positions. Most recently, he was executive director at Howden, where he led on portfolio analytics and optimisation, delegated placement, market consultancy, and strategic trading.

As chief broking officer, Cumberland will lead Miller’s strategic market engagement, data-driven innovation and service enhancements.

“As our international proposition continues to grow, Paul’s appointment further reflects the significant scale and ambition of our business. His wealth of experience will be invaluable as we sharpen our strategic trading and double down on our position as the broker of choice for those seeking independence, specialism and service,” Hands said in a statement.

“I am extremely excited and privileged to join Miller – a firm with a proud heritage and prestigious brand. In this new role, I look forward to uniting the company’s assets into a cohesive proposition for both clients and insurers and further accelerating our ambitious growth plans,” commented Cumberland.

HDI Global Promotes Tikhonov as Head of Marine Global Risk, Succeeding Cassau

HDI Global has promoted Nikita Tikhonov as the new head of Marine Global Risk, reporting to Dr. Carsten Schulte, head of Marine Underwriting.

The appointment is effective on Sept. 1.

Located in HDI Global’s Hannover headquarters, Tikhonov will oversee a team of five professionals working on HDI Global’s value proposition in marine. He succeeds Felix Cassau, who has chosen to take on new challenges at Hannover Re (an HDI Global sister company).

Nikita Tikhonov

Tikhonov started his career as a marine and property underwriter in Russia, before joining HDI Global in 2018. He was initially responsible for establishing and developing a new portfolio in marine cargo as well as accident & health insurance.

In his current position as a global risk underwriter, Tikhonov builds on his expertise, supporting local underwriters in HDI Global branch offices all over the world in developing their automotive portfolio.

“I am very pleased to have Nikita Tikhonov taking over the role as head of Marine Global Risk. Nikita brings strong expertise, energy, and a fresh perspective to the role,” commented Schulte. “I am confident that under his leadership, we will continue to act as our clients’ and brokers’ preferred partner in transformation as he will drive our marine global risk agenda forward. I wish Nikita much success in his new role.”

Schulte went on to Cassau for his contributions to the team. “He has played a pivotal role in shaping a forward-looking strategy for Marine Global Risk and fostered a positive and collaborative culture within our community. I wish Felix all the very best in his personal and professional life.”

HDI Global SE is the Corporate & Specialty Division of the Talanx Group (also the parent of Hannover Re). More than 5,000 employees in this division generated insurance revenue (gross) of approximately €10.0 billion in the year 2024 (according to IFRS 17).
